About the Event
Trail running can take you into some remote places. Often, as trail runners, we will use our
watches or GPS devices to follow a course, not really engaging with the landscape or paying
attention to the route we have taken. But what happens if those devices fail? My course aims to
provide you with the basic skills to go trail running in a variety of different conditions using a
map and compass. We will look at how to use these skills alongside technology in an ideal
situation and how to use a map and compass to get home safely if all else has failed. We will
also discuss safety on the trails.
The day will consist of a morning session in a classroom at the Charterhouse Centre in the
Mendips where we will look at some maps, discuss the theory behind using a map and compass
on the trails and look at route planning, strategies for staying on course and what to do if things
go wrong. After a break for lunch, we will then head out into the Mendips to put your
knowledge into practice and give you the confidence to use your newfound skills on the trail.
The afternoon run section will be approximately 10k at a pace to suit the whole group with
several sections of walking and regular breaks to go over map and compass skills.
I am mountain leader qualified and teach to the industry standard. I can also advise on routes to
practice your navigation.
Maps and compasses will be provided.
Maximum group size is eight.
